The persistent prayer of the righteous person is powerful (James 5:16, DV). Two brothers-in-Christ who have experienced the devastating effects of divorce, share how God has called, anointed, and affirmed their marriage healing ministries. |
Dr. Steven B. DavidSon and Minister Vincent Williams engaged in an effort that is sure to add insight and help for couples everywhere. DavidSon the author of the Christ-based Counseling volumes and leader of the A3CEES, national Christ-based ministry hosted the event as a preview to a web-based marriage conference scheduled this fall. When DavidSon asked Williams how he was inspired to become a marriage minister, Williams began by speaking about the personal pains of divorce. Additionally, he spoke about it as personal failure, and that he never wanted to repeat the experience again. DavidSon who is in a resurrected relationship with the wife of his youth, shared that it is a pattern in Scripture. “God uses persons who seem to fail, and fail miserably. If You Don’t Act Now, You’ll Regret It Later! *** http://1000churches.org/ourchoice/saveyourmarriage/ *** | Typically, persons may think, ‘how can you counsel me on marriage?’ Those who think from such a perspective know little of our God who uses our faults and failures as experiences to create compassion to help those who have encountered similar experiences. There must be learning along with the burning desire, but the experience creates an extraordinary determination to yoke with couples and individual spouses through their marital trials.
We understand the dilemma intimately. We are not suggesting that a person cannot be a family healer without such experience. There’s nothing like success. But we are going to be merciful and understanding when we see a couple in trouble.” Both men shared practical and spiritual realities of the things, which support successful marriages. Williams cited statistics that Christian marriages are just as predisposed to divorce as non-Christian marriages. Williams highlighted dating, and continuing to do the things so necessary to maintain relationships. Williams also talked about a perspective that marriages are viewed more as painful relationships than the unions of growth, positive regard, and supernatural support. DavidSon cited a significant spiritual key recorded in his Christ-based Counselor’s Handbook, The Process of Being Made Whole. According to DavidSon, the principles often repeated to couples in Ephesians 5, and Colossians 3 depend on the believers’ spirit-filled nature (Ephesians 5:18), or the Word of Christ dwelling richly (Colossians 3:16). DavidSon reveals the same writer uses both terms relative to successful marital relationships. He continued, “While the terms are different, they cause the same manifestations. This is because the writer, Apostle Paul used them as synonyms. They mean the same thing. No ‘Word of Christ-dwelling richly, no spirit fullness and visa versa.’” DavidSon added, “wives do not submit to husbands without the Word of Christ dwelling richly.” And husbands cannot love their wives as Christ loved the church without the Word of Christ dwelling richly. According to the Apostle Paul who introduced the terms, ‘spirit-filled and Word of Christ-dwelling richly,’ these synonymous terms represent the key we overlook. Spouses must be in pursuit of God’s ‘Word-filling.’” According to DavidSon, spouses and all believers must be partakers in systematic studies of God’s word and employ what he calls, “faith-life skills.” DavidSon was adamant that while all of the other practical issues are important, the spiritual principles are foundational.
